Workplace Safety For A Coworking Space

Workplace Safety for A Coworking Space

Safety in a coworking space is particularly important, because your office neighbors are often changing, and they may bring individuals into your work space that are not affiliated with the coworking space. Here are some simple but effective ways you can make your environment safer and more secure:

Workplace safety

Get acquainted

While the people around you may be changing often, doing your best to get to know them, not only means a friendlier work environment, but it can also lead to a safer one. Why? If you ‘know your neighbors,’ they may be less likely to try and steal your belongings.

Understand protocol

Upon starting work in a new coworking space, get to know the policy and protocol for reporting an incident. It is important to identify the owners and/or managers of the coworking space so that if a theft incident occurs, you know who to contact. In the event of an accident or emergency, they should be your first point of contact.

Fire Safety

There are several ways you can ensure fire safety. Make sure the fire exits aren’t blocked and there is nothing obstructing sprinklers. Pay special attention to cords and loose electrical equipment as they can be hazardous and invite accidents if unattended. If you see any of these hazards, make sure to bring it to the community manager’s attention.

Err on the side of caution

As you're bringing expensive laptops, smartphones and tablets into a public space, make sure to know where your personal belongings are at all times. If you leave your work area, lock up your belongings or take them with you. If you lend your personal devices to anyone, make sure to erase your purchase history and reset your passwords. Frequently changing your passwords and clearing browser history can prevent potential identity theft.
