Interview With Mark Furness, Founder At Essensys

Mark is originally from Liverpool then moved to London and became a professional drummer. He traveled all over on tours with a jazz band for a while until he decided on a career change. 

He got into IT sales for a distributor and found that he really enjoyed understanding numbers, working with people and closing deals. There was a gap in the market where he saw a huge opportunity and took a risk launching his own business. It’s been an extremely fulfilling adventure.

What is your favorite hobby?

I have a pilot’s license that I try to put to use whenever I can. In a past life, I was a drummer of a London jazz band and like to have at the drums when I’m not tied up with running the business.

Who are your ideal clients?

Our customers are forward thinking and they want to grow not only their business but the wider sector. Those who understand their long-term vision and are forward thinking, constantly evolving. That keeps us at the forefront of product development and innovation and it sets down a challenge which we love to meet.

What is the biggest reason for your success so far?

We are obsessive about the market our customers operate in. We don’t see ourselves as an outsider looking in – our customers treat us like we a fundamental part of the industry they operate in. Our dedication and focus on developing the best future forward product - that is the reason our customers choose us.

What is working best for your marketing right now?

A vision, good direction and a solid team effort. Backed by not selling to the market – but creating and developing content that is relevant, useful and helpful to the daily lives of our sector. We really see marketing as a tool that can help our customers and prospects not hinder or distract them.

What is your biggest differentiator?

We have an unparalleled global presence compared to our competitors and we’ve been in the industry longer than any other provider. For the past sixteen years, we have been developing software and working on the customer side. This has enabled us to gain a 360-degree view of what our customer needs, and more importantly an inherent understanding of their business, to be successful and grow. To this objective, we’ve taken steps within the business to ensure that we are the most comprehensive and innovative workspace management platform within the industry.

What is the toughest decision you’ve had to make in the last few months?

Not trying to do too much – there is so much we want to do and achieve. But deciding to stop investing in certain initiatives means we can be successful in the ones that we ruthlessly focus in on. I push my team every day and often they push back and that leads to healthy tension that gets us to the right answer for our customers.

If it was possible, what advice would you give yourself 10 years ago? 

Let the people around you help you to make better decisions.

Favorite place to travel to? 

New York. I love visiting our US headquarters in Midtown Manhattan. The energy of the city is enlivening and there is an attitude towards business that I just get a kick out of. Also, NYC has the best buffalo chicken wings.

What is your favorite app or online tool? 


What was the best event that you recently attended? 

The Global Workspace Association (GWA) Conference in Las Vegas. It’s our industry’s largest gathering in the US and I was tremendously proud of my company to be a platinum sponsor and have a successful presence there. Also, – I can’t forget the Business Centre Association (BCA) Conference – Jennifer Brooke and her team always organize a great coming together of our market.

What business would you love for someone else to start? 

A shared workspace using our platform ;)

What advice do you have for new founders? 

Be Brave. Take Risks. Take your people on the journey with you.
