The Farm SoHo Feature Interview: Esther Deutsch, Operations Manager of RCS Professional Services

Esther Deutsch 2

Esther Deutsch is a professional who wears many hats. In addition to working as Operations Manager for RCS Professional Services, she is also the co-founder of In This Together Roundtable -  a weekly business networking Zoom event. Additionally, she is a social worker who has extensive experience teaching in the university, along with conducting different workshops and events.

We’re fortunate to have been given the opportunity to have an interview with Esther, who tells us that she considers leadership as “a stance in the world,” not just a job title. Feel free to scroll down below to read our short chat  with her:

What is your line of business and who are your target market?

RCS Professional Services helps small to medium sized businesses (defined as 10 to 300 employees) leverage technology to achieve their business goals. We do this through a combination of methods including proactive conversations with our client business owners on an ongoing basis, IT budgeting and reporting, cybersecurity awareness training and solutions, and by providing a superior customer service with a competent on-shore, in-house tech team.

Tell us about your professional background.

Some of this is in my bio but I began with RCS about 7.5 years ago part-time as their procurement manager while I was in grad school for Social Work at Fordham University. I began working with them full-time when I graduated in 2017 and have been here since. I love the people I work with (both our team and our client community) and have been really blessed to continue to learn and grow in my role here. I also love to volunteer and it has been wonderful to work in a company that also believes in community and giving-back. You can check out some of our work on that front here and here

How would you describe your leadership style?

I do my best to lead by example, be positive, see the good in people and help people see the good in themselves. I believe that a good leader finds the best in the people around them - and helps them to see and capitalize on these strengths. I am a firm believer in the power of a team and love the quote, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

What new trends are emerging in your industry and how are you adapting to them?

We are seeing an uptick in cybersecurity hacks and breaches and are continuing to evolve our cybersecurity offerings in response. Whereas previously small businesses were not necessarily a target in the same way larger companies like Google or Facebook might be, today that is no longer the case. We are offering new education around cybersecurity for our clients and staff as well as working to educate the general public on what pitfalls to watch out for and how to avoid becoming a victim. We regularly post new training sessions on our YouTube channel, publish blog posts about different security topics, and run monthly live virtual events to raise awareness.  We have also recently formed a partnership with a cybersecurity firm called Vanguard and they have really helped us ensure our clients remain both compliant and secure.

Other trends include companies moving to a fully remote workforce long-term and helping them tighten up their cybersecurity infrastructure on mobile devices, ensuring best practices around data loss prevention and backups, making sure sensitive information doesn’t leave the company etc... while doing so. We are also introducing them to new technologies, such as Microsoft Azure, Intune, and Windows 365 Cloud PC, to help them improve security and efficiency. Finally, with the supply chain shortages affecting the delivery of hardware and equipment, we’re working to stay ahead of the curve and help our clients be proactive about their needs and tech predictions so that they can continue conducting business as usual and refrain from being impacted.

How focused are you on new technology? What are your favorite apps/software to use in your work?

We put a lot of emphasis on product development and have dedicated resources who invest in this area of the business. We also run two peer groups with other IT companies from all over the world during which we all share industry knowledge, best practices, and bounce ideas off of each other as well as invite different vendors to share their products with us so we can stay ahead of trends and expertise. We also attend numerous trade shows throughout the year and are always looking for new ways to help our clients grow and succeed.

Oh, there are so many terrific apps and software we like to use - LogMeIn’s GotoWebinar for hosting virtual events, Canva for designing beautiful flyers and graphics, Hubspot for marketing and CRM management and automating your marketing activities, Microsoft Teams for collaboration and even calling, Google Workspace for business efficiency and productivity, Microsoft Intune for Mobile Device Management, to name just a few.

What do you love to do during your free time?

I love to hang out with friends, host a party, go to the beach, or read

What’s the most meaningful advice you’ve ever received in life?

“Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind,” and “Just be yourself. Everyone else is taken.”

Did you have a mentor who changed your life? How so?

When I was in graduate school, I got the privilege of interning at a social service agency called P2L or Pathways to Leadership in NYC. There I mentored students 1-1 at an “at-risk” middle school as well as worked in the main office for some hours in curriculum development and research to inform our evidence-based practice. It was there that I got to work with my supervisor and program director, Stephanie Stolzebach.

Stephanie taught me how to lead by example and helped me transform into the practitioner I am today. I always left her feeling more uplifted than before - and I realized later on that that is one of the signs of a great leader. She helped me see what I was good at and develop my strengths and encouraged me to take everything I had - my unique skills and abilities - and use these to uplift my students and bring them hope. Now, when I am leading or managing people, I always think back to how she impacted me and changed my life and I do my best to emulate that for others.

How would you define success?

“Loving what you do and doing what you love.”
