What are HARO Backlinks & How Do They Boost Your SEO?

If you want people to visit your website, it’s important to use search engine optimization (SEO) strategies to rank high in search engines. The ideal scenario is that people see your website when they search for something related to what you offer or do. Although it’s possible to rank high up in the search engines, it’s not easy.

Link building is one strategy to earn a higher ranking in search engines. This is the process of getting other websites to link to yours. The key to making link-building work for you is to get links from high authority or credible websites related to the niche that you’re focusing on. Unfortunately, getting on high-ranking websites isn’t as easy as it seems. That’s where HARO backlinks come in.

What is HARO?

HARO, or Help A Reporter Out, is a free backlink outreach service connecting journalists to expert sources. HARO provides sources with the opportunity to connect with journalists to get media coverage for their business. Instead of searching for opportunities yourself, HARO lays them all out.

A journalist may go on the platform and ask for opinions or expertise on a specific topic. If the subject is your niche, you can send a response to the query. If the journalist uses your quote or opinion, you can get a backlink to your website.

Many high-ranking and reputable websites use HARO, such as The New York Times, Reuters, Forbes and abc.

How to use HARO

HARO is a straightforward and easy-to-use platform. Many businesses use HARO because it doesn’t cost money, and you can choose how much time you want to allot to it. There are four steps to how it works:

Step #1: Sign up as a source

Before you can access queries from different journalists, you must register as a source on HARO’s website. It’s free and won’t take up too much of your time. You can select the query categories that you want to receive, but you can also opt to subscribe to all categories.

Step #2: Select relevant queries

Once you’re signed up as a source, HARO will send you emails three times a day, from Monday to Friday. These emails contain collated queries from journalists. HARO categorizes these queries according to the topic.

You should track all these queries and find the ones relevant to your niche. Most queries will specify the media outlet they’re from, but others will choose to be anonymous. It’s up to you if you want to spend time doing these anonymous queries. They can either be from unknown websites or from incredibly high-ranking ones that will be worth the effort.

It’s best to focus on highly relevant queries to what you and your business do. You want to only respond to queries that can give you the best results because you will still be spending time crafting your answers.

Step #3: Send your pitch

Think of your responses as pitches. You want your answers to stand out amongst countless pitches that journalists get. When writing your responses, keep them short and to the point. Journalists have hundreds of responses to read, and they won’t want to read something that will take up too much of their time just to get a quote or two.

Make the job easier for the journalist. Provide them with everything they need, from your bio to your website that they can link to. Remember that they don’t have too much time on their hands, so you want to lay everything out for them.

Since they get many responses, it’s best to make your response as unique as possible. There’s a big chance that journalists receive repeated statements and quotes. You stand a much higher chance of getting a backlink by giving out-of-the-box and unexpected answers to their questions.

Step #4: Wait…

Once you’ve sent in your response, there’s no telling how long it will take the media outlet to publish the article. Sometimes, journalists let you know if they will use your quote or not. When they use your quote, most will give you a link to the published article.

However, there are times when you will not hear from journalists at all. This is why it’s important to monitor all the pitches you’ve sent and track them yourself. These articles usually take around a month to go live, but others might take less or even more time.

To help you keep track of these HARO backlinks, you can set up a Google Alert for your brand name. There are also other free and paid tools to help you monitor links and mentions of your brand or business.

Ways HARO can boost your SEO

There’s no doubt that HARO works because many businesses opt to use this service. The return is worth the time and effort you put into it because it can boost your business and SEO in the following ways:

HARO backlinks are the strongest backlinks. The platform is a gold mine of link-building opportunities because of the many possibilities of landing a link or referral on high authority pages.

Getting links from high-authority websites plays a big role in helping improve your website’s credibility and reputation with search engines. The more credibility you have, the more traffic you can gain.

Building relationships

Using HARO can help you build relationships with journalists. When they accept your pitches, it’s an opportunity for you to make a strong connection with other businesses and websites. This can lead to future collaborations such as guest posts (which also help boost your SEO).

Beyond the boost in SEO, it can be easier for you to learn new information to help you move forward with your brand if there’s someone you can collaborate and connect with.

Organic and Google-friendly

Getting HARO backlinks is the most organic way to build links. This means that Google will not flag you because it’s Google-friendly in that way. Link building isn’t very effective if it seems forced and like spam, and Google will know it if you do it like that.

If you use HARO, you get backlinks naturally, and they’re all related to the niche you want to focus on because you can filter out the topics early on.

Final thoughts

Link building is a major part of SEO, and HARO is one of the best ways to do it. It’s free, passive, and easy to do. But always remember that it needs patience and dedication. If you want to win high quality links, you must be prepared to put in the time and effort to craft unique and high-quality responses.
If you want to gain more awareness and traffic to your website, HARO is a great way to do it organically. Whether you’re starting out or already ranking pretty well, this platform helps give your website the credibility it needs.
